Should You Do SEO or Run Ads First? A Decision Framework.

You don't need another article explaining the difference between SEO and paid ads. You need a decision. Here are four questions. Your answers tell you where to start.


Question 1: Do you need leads this month or this quarter?

This month → Ads. SEO takes 3-6 months. If your pipeline is empty today, ads are the only channel that delivers in 30 days.

This quarter → Either. Run a small ad campaign for immediate leads while building organic content for months 4-6.

No urgency → SEO. Every piece of content keeps working for years. Every ad stops when you stop paying.

Question 2: What's your monthly budget?

Under ₹30,000 → SEO and content. Google Ads for competitive keywords cost ₹30-₹200+ per click. This budget is too thin for ads. Put it into intent-driven content.

₹30,000-₹75,000 → One channel done well. Don't split across both. Pick based on Question 1.

₹75,000+ → Both. Ads for immediate pipeline. SEO for long-term. Shift budget as organic matures.

Question 3: What's your average deal value?

Under ₹5,000 → SEO. Cost per lead from ads often eats low margins. Free organic traffic is safer.

₹5,000-₹50,000 → Either works. Deal value supports reasonable ad costs.

₹50,000+ → Ads become very efficient. ₹2,000 CPL on a ₹5,00,000 deal is exceptional ROI. But also invest in content — your buyer researches before buying.

Question 4: Does your buyer research before purchasing?

Short decision cycle → Ads + GBP. Customer searches, sees you, calls within minutes.

Long decision cycle → SEO + content first. Your buyer reads 5-10 pieces of content before contacting anyone. Without content, you're not in the consideration set.


This'll save you from the next agency that tells you "you need everything" without explaining why.
