Local SEO Checklist for Kerala Businesses

Bookmark this page. Come back to it monthly. Every task here is something I check during local SEO audits for businesses in Kochi, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Calicut, and Trivandrum. The businesses that do these consistently rank in the map pack. The ones that don't wonder where their customers went.

DO THIS ONCE (Setup)

• Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
  
• Set your primary category to the most specific option available (e.g., "Pediatric Dentist" not "Doctor")
  
• Add all relevant secondary categories
  
• Write a 250-word business description — what you do, who you serve, areas you cover
  
• Add your phone number (local, not call centre)
  
• Add your WhatsApp number
  
• Link your website
  
• Upload 20+ real photos: exterior, interior, products/services, team, work in progress
  
• Populate Q&A section with 10-15 common customer questions and answers
  
• List every service/product individually with descriptions and price ranges
  
• Set up WhatsApp Business with product catalog
  
• Set up Google Search Console and verify your website
  
• Set up Google Analytics 4 with conversion tracking (form submissions, call clicks, WhatsApp clicks)
  
• Create a review QR code that opens your Google review page directly
  
• List your business on 15-20 directories with perfectly consistent NAP: Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Yelp, Facebook Business, Yellow Pages, and relevant industry directories
  

DO THIS DAILY

• Respond to new Google reviews within 24 hours (positive: thank specifically; negative: acknowledge, apologise, resolve offline)
  
• Reply to GBP messages and questions within 2 hours during business hours
  
• Check WhatsApp Business for new customer messages
  

DO THIS WEEKLY

• Publish one GBP post (offer, new arrival, update, seasonal reminder)
  
• Ask 5-10 satisfied customers for Google reviews (use the QR code)
  
• Post 3 times on social media (if active on Instagram/Facebook)
  
• Check Google Search Console for any crawl errors or indexing issues on your website
  

DO THIS MONTHLY

• Upload 5-10 new real photos to GBP
  
• Review and update business hours if anything changed
  
• Check your search terms in Search Console — which queries bring you impressions?
  
• Publish 1-2 blog posts targeting patient/customer search queries specific to your area ("[service] cost [city]", "[service] near [locality]")
  
• Audit your GBP insights — how many calls, direction requests, website clicks? Trending up or down?
  
• Check competitor GBP profiles — are they doing something you're not?
  
• Review and respond to Justdial/Sulekha reviews if applicable
  

DO THIS QUARTERLY

• Full NAP consistency audit — check your business name, address, and phone number across all directories. Fix any inconsistencies.
  
• Update all photos older than 6 months
  
• Review and refresh your business description
  
• Add new Q&As to GBP based on recent customer questions
  
• Check your website speed on mobile (Google PageSpeed Insights) — is it under 3 seconds?
  
• Update service/product listings if offerings changed
  
• Review your overall digital marketing metrics — GBP actions, organic traffic from local keywords, enquiries from digital channels
  

LOCATION-SPECIFIC TASKS (If you serve multiple areas)

• Create a dedicated page on your website for each service area: "/[service]-[city]/" (e.g., "/plumber-aluva/", "/plumber-thrikkakara/")
  
• Each page must have unique content — not just the city name swapped. Include local landmarks, specific services offered in that area, local testimonials if possible
  
• Don't create thin duplicate pages — Google ignores them or penalises them
  

KERALA-SPECIFIC KEYWORD STRATEGY

• Research how your customers actually search — Malayalam-English mix, transliterated queries ("kalyana mandapam Thrissur", "stitching class near Edappally")
  
• Use conversational, specific long-tail keywords over formal English terms
  
• Include locality names, not just city names — "salon near Panampilly Nagar" converts better than "salon Kochi"
  
• Ask your front desk: "How do customers describe what they need when they call or walk in?" Those phrases are your keywords.

GBP complete and verified — 10 points 20+ real photos — 5 points 50+ Google reviews — 10 points Reviews coming in weekly — 10 points Responding to all reviews — 5 points Weekly GBP posts — 5 points Q&A populated — 5 points WhatsApp button on website — 5 points Mobile site loads under 3 seconds — 5 points Service-area pages — 5 points NAP consistent everywhere — 5 points Conversion tracking set up — 5 points Blog posts targeting local queries — 10 points Competitor monitoring — 5 points

70-100: Competitive. You're in or near the map pack. Keep going. 40-69: Visible but leaking. You show up sometimes but lose to competitors who do more. Focus on reviews and content. Under 40: Invisible. Most of your potential customers have never seen your business online. Start with GBP and reviews today.
